Google Buys Panoramio & Feedburner..and spies on Californians
Posted by Jon Beattie June 5th, 2007Google has snapped up another couple of Web 2.0 start ups.
Feedburner is an RSS publishing service that is very useful (we use it, basically makes it easier for people to get your feeds, plus a whole heap of other functionality). They have the technology to insert advertising into feeds, which is obviously what Google is after.
Panoramio is a service that allows you to see photos mapped to locations using Google Maps/Earth.
Will everyone in Web 2.0 land work for Google eventually? If you think you know who is next to be acquired, you can put down a bet at online bookmarker Bodog.com. The favourite at the moment is Facebook at 5 to 1 odds.
Here is an excellent summary/history of all Google’s acquisitions and makes for interesting reading. Might help you identify where the gaps are and hence the potential opportunities.
Meanwhile, Google has added a new Street View feature to their Google Maps site. This basically lets you go right down to street level and do a full 360 degree view with zoom. You can spy into people’s backyards, which has a few people a little perturbed. The pictures aren’t real time, they have big trucks that are driving around the San Francisco area with cameras mounted on them collecting the footage.
