Nielsen/NetRatings Quits Smoking in Favour of Harder Drugs
Posted by Joel Pinkham July 11th, 2007A standard in online measurement used on a large amount of major NZ sites has now changed the way they will rank websites. Previously they had used page views for this but now are going to use the total time spent of a site. This can be used to measure audiences when purchasing advertising.
By no means would I say page view measurements is great, but the time spent on a site? In my browser, I currently have 6 tabs open and right now my focus is writing this post. Am I actively engaged with those websites racking up the time I have spent on their sites?
Then there’s those people using multiple media at the same time. Near 70% of respondents in a study done by eMarketer watched TV at the time as using the Internet. Will we pay for advertising by the second someones at a website, even though they could have stopped looking at the web to watch an ad on TV?
I can’t say I have a solution but I can say we need a solution to measure actual engagement with a website.

Quite often when i’m playing games i’ll have multiple tabbed windows open in the background, often info on where a certain mob or item is.
By no means am I actually “on” these sites for ~6hrs…in this case I think page view would be more appropriate. But for something like trademe, or a news blog, time in seconds may be appropriate, but like you said, people still wander off to do other things…
