IE 7 Standards Compliance - or lack there of…
Posted by Jon Beattie August 19th, 2006This is a great post by Richard McManus at ZDNet relaying his phone interview with Microsoft’s Chris Wilson, the Group Program Manager for IE. Many bloggers, including me, claim that IE 7 is NOT compliant with CSS standards. Here are some of Wilson’s comments, which are a little disturbing:
“In IE7 we really are trying to support Web standards. Even at the expense of more backwards compatibility…”
“There were a ton of bugs from IE6 that were causing web developers a lot of pain - and we really wanted to nail those and the most requested features upfront.”
If Microsoft can’t sort this out, this will cause chaos for us and nearly every other web developer as we have to rewrite our CSS with hacks for yet another version of IE. Chris Wilson, I implore you to listen to the developer community and try to come up with a suitable solution prior to the final release.

I have just read that Microsoft plan to push out IE7 via a “high priority” Automatic Update.
